BMI for Children and Teens
Determining the Body Mass Index (BMI) for children and teens aged 2-20 years can be helpful and an inexpensive way to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. Child/teen BMI is calculated the same as adults (a person’s weight in kilograms/pounds divided by the square of height in meters/feet) with the additional age- and sex-specfic categories to determine BMI-for-age. Our BMI card can be directly written on with a wet- or dry-erase marker to calculate the BMI and then use the weight categories to classify your patient.
In both children and teens, a high or low amount of body fat can lead to weight-related diseases and other health issues; a high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. Research has shown that BMI is correlated with a more direct body fat measurement (skinfold thickness measurements, bioelectrical impedance, densitometry, and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).
